Sector Performance: Airlines Fly and Oil Dies, again.
For the 2nd week in a row, Airlines fly and Oil dies. Some of that came to a halt yesterday with oil rising a bit. Three of the top six stayed the same with Construction and Investment Banks, along with Airlines, remaining in the top 10%. The rest of the top performers for the week of July 21-25 were:
| Rank | Industry | % Return +/- the S&P | % up/down |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TRANSPORTATION-AIRLINES | 7.65% | 7.40% |
| 2 | COMPUTER-OFFICE EQUIPMENT | 4.54% | 4.78% |
| 3 | CONSTRUCTION-BUILDING SERVICES | 4.74% | 4.50% |
| 4 | MEDICAL CARE | 4.32% | 4.08% |
| 5 | CONSUMER PROD-MISC STAPLES | 4.16% | 3.91% |
| 6 | INVESTMENT BANKERS & MGRS | 4.04% | 3.98% |
Oil, once again, takes up 50% of the bottom feeders. We are not so sure how long this will last. Demand might be off slightly in the past few weeks, but it will rise again and not much in the way of new supply is on the way. The rest of the week’s poor performers were:

| 59 of 59 | OIL-EXPLORATION&PRODUCTION | -4.23% | -4.45% |
| 58 | OIL MACHINERY-SERVICES-DRILLING | -2.68% | -2.90% |
| 57 | OIL MACHINERY-SERVICES-DRILLING | -6.26% | -4.66% |
| 56 | METALS-NON FERROUS | -2.34% | -2.57% |
| 55 | OIL-INTEGRATED | -1.63% | -1.86% |
| 54 | SEMICONDUCTORS | -1.37% | -1.60% |
